Today i found a monarch butterfly in our institute

Posted by Helder Valente over 3 years ago

A story about Invasive plants the monarch butterfly and the power of nature to adapt

Today as i was working in the greenhouse i found a huge buterfly like the ones i used to see in América...

After some research i found that the flying creature was a monarch butterfly that everybody knows because of its amazing migration from Canada to Mexico...

There used to be found some of these butterflys dead in the southern portuguese coast, problably because they got lost on there travel or maybe looking for new adventures in the old continent..

Well... it looks that around 1990 a plant from south africa started to be found in the southwest of portugal...Asclepias syriaca had arrived to stay...

And with this casual encounter started a simbyosis that 20 years later makes me be here today talking with you folks about what i found today.

Behind all the discution about the invasors plants from "mars" there is a pattern of inclusion and integration in ecossistems and  that is what i find more precious in permaculture, in natures patterns of adaptation.

Theres a new dawn, theres a new day in natures creations and in the sustainable metamorfosis...
