New Zealand's Regional Permaculture Hubs
NZ's regional permaculture page hubs are currently hosted by facebook and form local community networking groups to utilise towards community resilience and a permanent culture in the beckoning future.
HISTORY
I had it in my mind that it's time to permaculture network with everyone, rather than predominantly within permaculture circles. In 2011 I saw an opportunity that nobody seemed to be interested in taking advantage of - facebook. It's use seemed obvious. I felt facebook had significant potential to reach a lot of people - many unaware of permaculture and the solutions it offers, and also importantly to a youthful demographic. I also felt it had the ability to function on both a local, regional and nationwide level as a tool to get people thinking and acting together both online and also networking in the real world face-to-face. It also has another function - to promote permaculture related websites and a main regionalised forum.
In October of 2011 the first of fifteen regional pages was founded - Permaculture Manawatu. I managed it as the guinea pig before launching the rest of the pages nationwide a few months later. The local paper featured an article which helped bolster it's popularity.
As it was not feasible for one person to manage all fifteen pages I started accumulating more and more willing and able people from the various regions throughout the country to act as their local permaculture mentors, along with helping out with basic page administration and interacting with their local region. With the multitude of various people now onboard, a concentrated assortment of talent now exists. We're all learning more and more from each other over time as the pages evolve, which is adding more and more value to the pages as a whole.
From an holistic management point of view the statistics offered by facebook also allow us to consider some important data, which includes: age groups and genders using the pages; what regions are more active than others; which topics are of most and least interest; where confusion over topics is most prevalent, which regions are possibly strongest and weakest with the permaculture principles and concepts; and more. This can help with targeting what courses and events to run where, or which regions could do with more permacultural input for example.
The opportunity I had envisaged in 2011 has become reality. Knowledge sharing, trading, permablitzes, courses, events, and even donated and contra-dealed prizes of permaculture packs and related books have been passing through. Our pages are now able to also drive people to external websites and get things moving along. The pages are now at a point where we have multiple mentors for each region. We would like to attract more reputable mentors, and really get the interaction going in the comments sections, and hopefully direct followers to a nationwide regionalised forum for enhanced networking. My thinking is that once that happens we will build up a lot more momentum and have an even greater impact towards community resilience. Furthermore, this would all be a template for other countries to employ.
At present we also have some foreign involvement. Russ Grayson is onboard as one of our Australian correspondents to keep us informed of what's going on over there. As Wellington's our capital he posts there as and when he sees fit and I pick up anything I feel needs passing on to the other pages. We also have Richard Telford from PermaculturePrinciples.com who has admin access to promote David Holmgrens www.permacultureprinciples.com site.
What I like about this too is if facebook crumbles and people shift to another networking platform, we'll just simply move with it - we're flexible.

Whatever your interest or passion, this page is about exchanging the crucial information we need to be healthy, happy, and informed - right here, right now! Lets get together and work out the nuts and bolts of ushering in a new economic paradigm into this world which, globally, would dramatically improve the quality of life for billions.
We know all too well that our civilisation has marched across the planet and left a desert in its’ wake. Now find out how you, your family and friends can resolve this. Permaculture - the science of designing a culture that can actually be permanent. It’s a global movement towards positive change that’s literally regenerating the biosphere. It starts with your way of thinking and flows out to your home, then local community and beyond.
You can use this space for all sorts of things, eg: discuss ideas, get feedback with designs, be inspired, swap seeds and plants, upload photos or video, organise events, a permablitz, meetings, workshops, protests, or tours, or simply let people know what you want to trade, or have free to give away - share the surplus!
GOALS
✔ Primary Goal: To build and maintain individuals, families and communities which are healthy, happy, co-operative, resourceful and creative, with an inter-generational way of thinking; and establishing truly sustainable and regenerative production, management and educational systems. From designing your own private functional landscape to designing an entire functional world, permaculture can provide you with the tools.
✔ Environment Stabilisation: Maintain and create stable, diverse eco-systems that allow for positive sequestration of carbon, and secure watersheds.
✔ Health, Happiness & Prosperity: Restore and enhance yields, prosperity and health via integrated and regenerative agricultural practices, and holistic management - “think in wholes”. Have fun, keep your mind healthy and active, and create beauty.
✔ Bio-Diversity & Bio-Integrity: Maintain and increase populations of wildlife species, bring space to life - save natural seed, preserve and enhance natural habitats.
✔ Water & Soil Improvement: Of towns and cities within industry and agriculture. Harvest rainwater for every day use and prevent agricultural nutrient run-off into waterways by establishing natural systems to allow rain to be filtered through the land first. Sequester carbon back into the ground - create compost and bio-char, use composting toilets, and re-establish functional grasslands for example.
✔ Nutrient Cycles: Maintain and restore local and global nutrient and water cycles.
✔ Rivers, Lakes & Oceans: Maintain and restore riverine, riparian, estuary and ocean habitats.
✔ Zero Waste: Prevent waste of financial, human and natural resources by reducing consumption, cyclic thinking, and using zero waste principles. Rubbish = resources.
✔ Sustainable Energy: Develop decentralised, sustainable energy production systems.
✔ “Real World” Education: Teach and embed "Holistic Management" decision-making and permaculture design ethics and principles within the education system, and throughout communities and organisations at all levels.
✔ Disseminate Knowledge: Demonstrate, educate, co-operate, enhance awareness and provide value (to ourselves, family, friends, students, neighbours, clients, and community).
