Chaitraban

Project Type

Rural, Residential

Project Summary

Chaitraban is a new project taken up a couple of years ago. It is currently an experimental permaculture homestead. We hope to move towards being as self-sustained as possible while making it into a calm retreat for ourselves and for other people.

Project Description

Chaitraban is a three acre homestead and was started as a weekend farm for a family of city dwellers with a green dream. The land, when acquired was untilled and was quite arid in the absence of any green cover. A comfortable house was built for the children and the land was terraced as wanted. The orchard was planted and no chemicals and pesticides were used at all. Some soil had to be imported to plant the trees and the occassional vegetables that were grown.

Slowly, the land took shape and started looking green. Lots of birds and butterflies started making nests in the foliage and Chaitraban was blessed with a bounty of flowers and fruits in a short time of one year. Bees found the sweet nectar in the flowers and an occassional hare visited the site. We learnt about Permaculture some time back and have started experimenting with the same at Chaitraban. Slowly and surely, we are sure it will be a paradise that we dreamt of some years ago.

Today, the land is getting greener by the day and more and more birds are making their homes in the blossoming trees. The soil is slowly converting from arid to a softer and lucious loam. The small new pond has water lily and fish and frogs making it their home and the bees find a new variety of flower everyday. Plans are on for a chicken coop, making swales before the monsoon and building a grey water treatment system this year.

Permaculture is weaving magic!

It is almost three years and as Toby Hemenway says, the magic is happening! The trees are yielding shining tasty food, the variety of weeds on the land is slowly reducing, the soil is darker colour now and there are tons and tons of teeny tiny insects cra

Legend of Badges

Note: The various badges displayed in people profiles are largely honesty-based self-proclamations by the individuals themselves. There are reporting functions users can use if they know of blatant misrepresentation (for both people and projects). Legitimacy, competency and reputation for all people and projects can be evidenced and/or developed through their providing regular updates on permaculture work they’re involved in, before/after photographs, etc. A spirit of objective nurturing of both people and projects through knowledge/encouragement/inspiration/resource sharing is the aim of the Worldwide Permaculture Network.

PRI Teacher

With the exception of the ‘Member’ who has never taken a PDC, all of the above can apply to become a PRI PDC Teacher. PRI PDC Teachers are those who the PRI recognise, through a vetting board, as determined and competent to teach the full 72-hour course as developed by Permaculture founder Bill Mollison – covering all the topics of The Designers’ Manual as well as possible (i.e. not cherry picking only aspects the teacher feels most interested or competent in). Such teachers also commit to focussing on the design science, and not including subjective spiritual/metaphysical elements. The reason these items are not included in the PDC curriculum is because they are “belief” based. Permaculture Design education concerns itself with teaching good design based on strategies and techniques which are scientifically provable.

PRI PDC Teachers may be given teaching and/or consultancy offerings as they become available as the network grows.
