Project Description

Integrated Forest Gardening (Click here to order)

The Complete Guide to Polycultures and Plant Guilds in Permaculture Systems.

I am excited to offer this new book that explains and details the design process I use to build polycultures and design the edible landscape. Step by step instructions and 15 polyculture examples. Get out the highlighter and fill the margins with notes. It will bring your desire for a sustainable food forest to harvest.

"Integrated Forest Gardening fills a major gap in the canon of permaculture books, giving us, at last, a detailed guide to guild and polyculture design. No longer is this subject mysterious and daunting; in this book we now have specific instructions for designing and installing multi-species plant groups. Chapter 7, which describes 15 guilds and their plant members, is a golden nugget worth the price of the book alone. This is an essential book for all food foresters and ecological designers."
—Toby Hemenway, Author of Gaia's Garden: A Guide to Home-Scale Permaculture

PRI SouthWoodsis located in the Spring Lake watershed and is a rich fertile island surroundedby wetlands. The permaculture principals are an integral part of every systemat SouthWoods. They guide the decisions, enrich the soil, conserve andcollect natural resources, build flora and fauna diversity, and ensure thesustained capacity of the residents.  SouthWoods is a living lab ofdesign, plant systems and research.

In 2006during the summer solstice, Geoff and Nadia Lawton of PRI Australia visited ourhomestead for a workshop for PRI/Cold Climate. More images can be seen on the2006 blog. Geoff helped us refine the berm and swale design. Nadia introducedus to some of our native plants that also grow in Jordan.

Daniel Halsey is a certified permaculture designer and teacher for the Permaculture Research Institute, Cold Climate. Daniel graduate from the University of Minnesota with a Bachelor of Science degree in Temperate Climate Polyculture Design and a Masters degree in Horticulture. His interest in agro-ecosystems and edible forest gardens began with an introduction to polyculture design in 2003. Polyculture plant systems are patterned after forest ecology where each plant contributes to the health of the plant and soil community.

Dan and Ginny live on the twenty-five acre wetland savannah called SouthWoods, in Prior Lake, where they have manage self-sustaining forest gardens of fruiting trees, shrubs and nut crops. SouthWoods incorporates permaculture principals in all aspects of living.

The science of design is the cornerstone of Southwoods programs. Understanding the ecological dynamics built into our living systems allows us to enhance the natural capital on our landscape.  Students studying, designing, and implementing projects at Southwoods support their decisions with the principles of Permaculture and mechanisms of the biological systems that support all life.

We are logging the Brix on each crop in the orchard. Amazing tool for calculating the maturity.

Legend of Badges

Note: The various badges displayed in people profiles are largely honesty-based self-proclamations by the individuals themselves. There are reporting functions users can use if they know of blatant misrepresentation (for both people and projects). Legitimacy, competency and reputation for all people and projects can be evidenced and/or developed through their providing regular updates on permaculture work they’re involved in, before/after photographs, etc. A spirit of objective nurturing of both people and projects through knowledge/encouragement/inspiration/resource sharing is the aim of the Worldwide Permaculture Network.

Member

Member

A member is a permaculturist who has never taken a PDC course. These cannot become PDC teachers. Members may be novice or highly experienced permaculturists or anywhere in between. Watch their updates for evaluation.

Male memberFemale member

Permaculture Matchmaker

One of these badges will show if you select your gender and the "I'm single, looking for a permaculture partner" option in your profile.

unverified

PDC

People who claim to have taken a Permaculture Design Certificate (PDC) course somewhere in the world.

verified

PDC Verified

People who have entered an email address for the teacher of their PDC course, and have had their PDC status verified by that teacher. Watch their updates for evaluation.

pri_verified

PRI PDC

People who’ve taken a Permaculture Research Institute PDC somewhere in the world.

pdc_teacher

PDC Teacher

People who claim to teach some version of PDC somewhere in the world.

PRI Teacher

With the exception of the ‘Member’ who has never taken a PDC, all of the above can apply to become a PRI PDC Teacher. PRI PDC Teachers are those who the PRI recognise, through a vetting board, as determined and competent to teach the full 72-hour course as developed by Permaculture founder Bill Mollison – covering all the topics of The Designers’ Manual as well as possible (i.e. not cherry picking only aspects the teacher feels most interested or competent in). Such teachers also commit to focussing on the design science, and not including subjective spiritual/metaphysical elements. The reason these items are not included in the PDC curriculum is because they are “belief” based. Permaculture Design education concerns itself with teaching good design based on strategies and techniques which are scientifically provable.

PRI PDC Teachers may be given teaching and/or consultancy offerings as they become available as the network grows.
