J&J Acres

Project Type

Rural, Residential, Demonstration, Educational

Project Summary

J&J Acres is a family homestead. We are developing our 7 acres using permaculture practices. The site is still being developed and will likely be developed over the course of several years due to extremely limited capital. The site receives approximately 56" of annual rainfall and has seasonal creeks. Varying elevation and slope facings throughout the site provides several opportunities for various earthworks.

Project Description

Site Location

The site is located only 2 miles off of a major Internate, I-20, allowing for quick and easy access.

The property is our home. The property spans 7 acres and was chosen when our intent was to clear the land simply to have pleasure animals.

Time has changed our perspective and now we are working towards a permaculture site that will feed our family and those in the local area for decades to come.

We believe that while the site was not originally selected with permaculture in mind that it is still highly viable and will turn in to a mature and well developed system.

The site is on the boarder of the 7B / 8A hardiness zones.

Natural Habitat

While the majority of the local area is a pine forest, we feel fortunate that this site has an abundance of hardwoods.

One resource in particular are black walnuts. However, the trees do not seem to be as healthy has the could be as the nuts are small and sparse.

We have seen deer, fox, opposum, racoon, rabbit, crayfish and a wide variety of birds on the property. We do not doubt that there is futher wildlife that we have not observed.

Water Resource

The property recieves an annual average rainfall of 56". Two seasonal creeks flow across and converge on the property. Once source is overflow from a pond two properies away and the other is roadway runoff.

Several structures, including a large home, carport and shed are other locations for water harvesting.

Light Resource

The majority of the property allows for either full access to the sun, or full access until the late evening hours.

We fell this will permit us to make use of microclimates and grow a wide variety of food producing plants.

Current Efforts

Our current effort is to clear the existing understory so that the land can be better assessed for further planning.

The propery was previously harvested for wood. While several old trees do remain, the majority of the trees are less than 8" in diamater.

Future Plans

Once the property is cleared swales will be outlined and dug along the hillsides so that food forests can be planted.

There are also several points that are well positioned for ponds large enough for fish.

Difficulties

Capital is our challenge. We are having to take our efforts a day at a time. We cannot simply clear the land and begin earthworks.

Our only large equipment is a small farm tractor. Between this and a chainsaw, the work is going slow, but steady.

Big Plan

Our desire for the final plan is to have a permaculture demonstration farm that produces food to feed our family while also allowing us to host courses and interns.

Legend of Badges

Note: The various badges displayed in people profiles are largely honesty-based self-proclamations by the individuals themselves. There are reporting functions users can use if they know of blatant misrepresentation (for both people and projects). Legitimacy, competency and reputation for all people and projects can be evidenced and/or developed through their providing regular updates on permaculture work they’re involved in, before/after photographs, etc. A spirit of objective nurturing of both people and projects through knowledge/encouragement/inspiration/resource sharing is the aim of the Worldwide Permaculture Network.

Member

A member is a permaculturist who has never taken a PDC course. These cannot become PDC teachers. Members may be novice or highly experienced permaculturists or anywhere in between. Watch their updates for evaluation.

Permaculture Matchmaker

One of these badges will show if you select your gender and the "I'm single, looking for a permaculture partner" option in your profile.

PDC

People who claim to have taken a Permaculture Design Certificate (PDC) course somewhere in the world.

verified

PDC Verified

People who have entered an email address for the teacher of their PDC course, and have had their PDC status verified by that teacher. Watch their updates for evaluation.

PRI Teacher

With the exception of the ‘Member’ who has never taken a PDC, all of the above can apply to become a PRI PDC Teacher. PRI PDC Teachers are those who the PRI recognise, through a vetting board, as determined and competent to teach the full 72-hour course as developed by Permaculture founder Bill Mollison – covering all the topics of The Designers’ Manual as well as possible (i.e. not cherry picking only aspects the teacher feels most interested or competent in). Such teachers also commit to focussing on the design science, and not including subjective spiritual/metaphysical elements. The reason these items are not included in the PDC curriculum is because they are “belief” based. Permaculture Design education concerns itself with teaching good design based on strategies and techniques which are scientifically provable.

PRI PDC Teachers may be given teaching and/or consultancy offerings as they become available as the network grows.
