Food for Thought Community Garden

Project Type

Urban, Community, Demonstration, Educational

Project Summary

Re-design of land and urban spaces for a community garden. Main users: elder and people with disabilities and accessibility challenges. The garden was designed in October 2013 but still has areas in need (for which I am the main designer): these areas will include a gazebo and sitting/eating/meeting protected place with a cob oven, an edible wall, a pollinator corridor and a small, portable food forest and a mural

Project Description

The “Food for Thought” community garden started as one of the projects under the Surrey/White Rock Food Action Coalition in which board I work. The garden consist on a leased land from BC Ambulance and adjacent to the South Surrey Food Bank. The plan was to convert the three adjacent areas in “edible landscapes” for local people and those accessing the food bank.

I became the garden coordinator in October 2013 and had since run a few informal workshops on composting, companion planting, mulching, introduction to Permaculture and food preservation. We built 24 plots, four of them wheelchair accessible, 10 fully dedicated to produce fresh vegetables for the food bank, 2 for the local persons with disabilities society and 12 for people living in the area. With a few exceptions, most gardeners are mature and some may need adjustments so their plots are made more accessible.

The next steps of the project are to transform the empty corners into living spaces for people to relax, cook, eat and share skills as well as to erect an edible wall to achieve both beauty and privacy.

The final project should become the first Permaculture demonstration site.

Legend of Badges

Note: The various badges displayed in people profiles are largely honesty-based self-proclamations by the individuals themselves. There are reporting functions users can use if they know of blatant misrepresentation (for both people and projects). Legitimacy, competency and reputation for all people and projects can be evidenced and/or developed through their providing regular updates on permaculture work they’re involved in, before/after photographs, etc. A spirit of objective nurturing of both people and projects through knowledge/encouragement/inspiration/resource sharing is the aim of the Worldwide Permaculture Network.

PRI Teacher

With the exception of the ‘Member’ who has never taken a PDC, all of the above can apply to become a PRI PDC Teacher. PRI PDC Teachers are those who the PRI recognise, through a vetting board, as determined and competent to teach the full 72-hour course as developed by Permaculture founder Bill Mollison – covering all the topics of The Designers’ Manual as well as possible (i.e. not cherry picking only aspects the teacher feels most interested or competent in). Such teachers also commit to focussing on the design science, and not including subjective spiritual/metaphysical elements. The reason these items are not included in the PDC curriculum is because they are “belief” based. Permaculture Design education concerns itself with teaching good design based on strategies and techniques which are scientifically provable.

PRI PDC Teachers may be given teaching and/or consultancy offerings as they become available as the network grows.
