Low Pressure Pneumatic Grid project

Project Type

Urban, Residential, School Projects, Demonstration, Educational

Project Summary

Produce low pressure air from renewable sources, distributing it in pipes and using it in "airlift pumps" to pump water around "pallet Gardens" Other uses too. Testing and improving every aspect of the pneumatic grid, bit by bit and all at the same time.

Project Description

I started the project on August 11th 2012 with one pallet garden which had continuous cycling of water by an airlift pump.  I took apart a pallet and rebuilt it as a box with plastic on bottom and soil inside.  A slight slope let water drain into a bucket that was dug into the ground.  Water cycled around and the idea is to keep the soil wet and oxygenated and keep the water moving so that the oxygen heat and waste products are all moving too.     The air was supplied by an aquarium bubble pump and as I built up and tested the system,  I added another pump to produce about 3 liters per minute of air at just under 1 psi and this was able to run up to 8 pallet gardens.  Last spring in  my greenhouse I tried using the airlift to move heat in a big way with the "dripwall delta" In my case I just let water drip down the back material to collect heat and down the bottom of the inclined planter,  there was no tubes in the bottom.

I got the earliest peas in Victoria with that method.

Legend of Badges

Note: The various badges displayed in people profiles are largely honesty-based self-proclamations by the individuals themselves. There are reporting functions users can use if they know of blatant misrepresentation (for both people and projects). Legitimacy, competency and reputation for all people and projects can be evidenced and/or developed through their providing regular updates on permaculture work they’re involved in, before/after photographs, etc. A spirit of objective nurturing of both people and projects through knowledge/encouragement/inspiration/resource sharing is the aim of the Worldwide Permaculture Network.

PRI Teacher

With the exception of the ‘Member’ who has never taken a PDC, all of the above can apply to become a PRI PDC Teacher. PRI PDC Teachers are those who the PRI recognise, through a vetting board, as determined and competent to teach the full 72-hour course as developed by Permaculture founder Bill Mollison – covering all the topics of The Designers’ Manual as well as possible (i.e. not cherry picking only aspects the teacher feels most interested or competent in). Such teachers also commit to focussing on the design science, and not including subjective spiritual/metaphysical elements. The reason these items are not included in the PDC curriculum is because they are “belief” based. Permaculture Design education concerns itself with teaching good design based on strategies and techniques which are scientifically provable.

PRI PDC Teachers may be given teaching and/or consultancy offerings as they become available as the network grows.
