PRI TeacherWith the exception of the ‘Member’ who has never taken a PDC, all of the above can apply to become a PRI PDC Teacher. PRI PDC Teachers are those who the PRI recognise, through a vetting board, as determined and competent to teach the full 72-hour course as developed by Permaculture founder Bill Mollison – covering all the topics of The Designers’ Manual as well as possible (i.e. not cherry picking only aspects the teacher feels most interested or competent in). Such teachers also commit to focussing on the design science, and not including subjective spiritual/metaphysical elements. The reason these items are not included in the PDC curriculum is because they are “belief” based. Permaculture Design education concerns itself with teaching good design based on strategies and techniques which are scientifically provable. PRI PDC Teachers may be given teaching and/or consultancy offerings as they become available as the network grows. |

Permaculture school garden in a hyper arid landscape in the Dead Sea Valley of Jordan.
Project Description
Nadia Lawton was invited by Lesley Byrne on behalf of the philanthropic society "Kids are Sweet", to design a permaculture garden for an all girls school in Jawasri, Jordan. The garden was designed as part of a Permaculture Design Course run by PRI Jordan and PRI Australia and implemented by Nadia Lawton and local women. To suit the very arid climate of the region, the garden was designed with sunken beds and raised footpaths so that all the water could be retained within the beds. There is very little available water for irrigation in the area, and it is delivered just a couple of times per week in a water tanker, so the garden was designed in this way so as to maximise water efficiency. As well as the vegetable garden, a small dry climate food forest with a picnic area, a plant nursery and an outside classroom were also established.
The project is currently run by the local women and teachers and is a great success, winning various school gardening awards, and the girls at the school are also able to sell some of the produce from the garden and provide money to other similar projects in the area.
