Legend of Badges

Note: The various badges displayed in people profiles are largely honesty-based self-proclamations by the individuals themselves. There are reporting functions users can use if they know of blatant misrepresentation (for both people and projects). Legitimacy, competency and reputation for all people and projects can be evidenced and/or developed through their providing regular updates on permaculture work they’re involved in, before/after photographs, etc. A spirit of objective nurturing of both people and projects through knowledge/encouragement/inspiration/resource sharing is the aim of the Worldwide Permaculture Network.

PRI Teacher

With the exception of the ‘Member’ who has never taken a PDC, all of the above can apply to become a PRI PDC Teacher. PRI PDC Teachers are those who the PRI recognise, through a vetting board, as determined and competent to teach the full 72-hour course as developed by Permaculture founder Bill Mollison – covering all the topics of The Designers’ Manual as well as possible (i.e. not cherry picking only aspects the teacher feels most interested or competent in). Such teachers also commit to focussing on the design science, and not including subjective spiritual/metaphysical elements. The reason these items are not included in the PDC curriculum is because they are “belief” based. Permaculture Design education concerns itself with teaching good design based on strategies and techniques which are scientifically provable.

PRI PDC Teachers may be given teaching and/or consultancy offerings as they become available as the network grows.

Project Summary

The Seres Centre for Climate Change Education and Sustainable Development is based in Guatemala. It combines innovative community empowerment programs with climate change education to engage with locals and help them to understand the environmental challenges that they are facing, and works with communities using permaculture, appropriate technology and natural construction techniques to help them to build more resilient, sustainable communities.

Project Description

The Seres Centre for Climate Change Education and Sustainable Development is a community-benefit (aka non-profit) project located in Tecpan, Guatemala.
The project is located on a 145-acre property alongside project partners the Project Somos Children's Village (an eco-sustainable village for orphaned and abandoned children) and will also incorporate a number of social enterprises that will contribute to the financial sustainability of the projects.

Our Mission is to facilitate sustainable, grassroots community development and climate change adaptation through education, working side-by-side with at-risk communities to restor our Earth and create a thriving, just and sustainable world. Our Vision of the Seres Centre is help communities build resilience to climate change by providing them with tools and knowledge in a creative and innovative environment where people, ideas and resources come together to find solutions that are socially just and environmentally sustainable.

After working for more than 3 years in Guatemala and El Salvador with individual communities and groups, we made the decision to expand our operations so that we could provide our programs on a level that could match the large-scale adaptation and education that is needed amongst rural communities in this region.

The Seres Centre will be a demonstration and educational campus, an example of sustainable living applicable to people from all walks of life. It will include building methods such as super-adobe, bamboo, straw-bale and eco-brick; appropriate technology such as biodigestors, solar, wind, hydro, water filters, ram pumps and more. It will also be a permaculture demonstration and education farm, providing a mix of courses for both locals and international participants.

We are always looking for proactive partners and people willing to get involved, collaborate and share. If you would like to find out more about the project please visit the website or send us a message through my profile.
