About BARBARA LAMAR

I was introduced to Permaculture in the 1980's when a friend commented that my 1/2 acre garden looked like a permaculture garden. Bill Mollison's Designer's Manual had just been published, and when I read it I found that I had been using some of the Permaculture techniques, such as plant communities, greenhouse attached to the house to provide mutual temperature stabilization, grey water system, and using chickens and goats to clear land. Still, I learned a huge amount from the book and later took a workshop taught by Bill Mollison and a Design Certificate course taught by Geoff Lawton.

I have continued to use Permaculture techniques in my own gardens and continue to learn at least one or two new things every day.

When I mentioned to Bill Mollison back in the early 1990's that I was a lawyer and CPA with a focus on small business, his advice was to continue this as my profession. I took his career advice, as well as his advice to leave wild a 160 acre tract of land that had never been settled by humans. Especially since we've had years of drought, this wild post oak savannah land is far more productive than neighboring lands that were cleared and planted in grass with the intent of grazing cattle, being similar to the dehesa systems used in southern Spain and Portugal.

My San Antonio, Texas based firm provides tax, legal, management consulting, and accounting services to small businesses.

I am currently working to restore a 25 acre tract of badly abused farm land in Caldwell County, Texas and to install a Permaculture garden on a one-acre commercial site in central San Antonio, where my office is located.
