About Kat Gawlik

I was forced to live simply and self-reliantly when I moved to a small island with a population of 300 and no shops off the coast of SE Queensland, Australia, in 2009. 10 years previously I acquired my BSc in Biology, but until I moved to the island I had very limited ideas on permaculture and sustainability. Living on an isolated island, I had no choice but to grow my own food, catch rainwater for drinking, and make use of the available resources on the small island. I had a worm farm, 3 (very spoilt) hens, mature mango trees, 3m x 3m square annual vegetable garden and made compost. I harvested free resources from the sea and from the few old fruit trees scattered around the island - remnants of an intensive agricultural system supplying food to the closest major city in the early 1900's.
In 2010 I created the website/blog 'For Greenies' to share articles and videos of my experiences and learnings.
For the last 5 years I have spent time travelling and learning from permaculture pioneers such as Jude and Michel Fanton from the Seedsavers Network of Australia, Robin Clayfield author of "You Can Have Your Permaculture & Eat It Too", and Elisabeth Fekonia from the Sunshine Coast.

I am currently trying to practice permaculture on my liveaboard sailboat, and to get my hands in the earth am involved with the Bay Of Plenty Permablitz group as a designer. Not only do I strive to design and implement permaculture designs in my country of birth, but also I hope to return to the Solomon Islands and PNG to teach and implement permaculture.
