About Derek Jean
My background is in engineering, teaching, guiding, instructing. I have worked in mechanical engineering for systems such as water management, pressurized gases, detailed designs and calculations. I have also been guiding people in the wilderness by kayak and canoe, as well as sailing expeditions on the Canadian and Alaskan Pacific Coast.
I became interested in permaculture because I want to live in a better way, and I want to use my leadership and teaching skills for something worthwhile. I also love systems thinking, and I can't seem to apply myself to anything resembling 'reductionist-paradigm' anymore.
I am currently part of a steering committee for a transition town movement on Quadra Island, BC, Canada. I a consulting to whomever is interested in learning and adopting permaculture principles. I am offering introduction to permaculture courses on the island right now, and will be offering a PDC starting this fall. Mostly, I am applying the principles of permaculture to the transformation of my own life, economical activities, and home and garden.
I am also developing a foundation that expands the principles of permaculture to sustainable transportation and mentoring education. The foundation is called Expeditions For Life and can be found at www.expeditionsforlife.com
