About Chris Bisson

I am an academic social scientist, community organizer, urban planner and permaculture designer. My background is in social justice, ecology, and indigenous sovereignty activism, as well as urban food systems planning and right to the city work. I am also in the process of completing a Master of Arts at Carleton University in the Department of Geography and Environmental Studies

I came to permaculture through my activism and gardening. Most notably it was through guerrilla gardening that I discovered permaculture. But it is my encounter with the Permaculture Project Greater Toronto Area that I discovered that I should really peruse the discipline. I have also been deep in study over the diversity of literature, lectures, videos and recordings on permaculture for the past few years.

Last year, I founded Permaculture Ottawa with a number of other practitioners with the purpose of focusing on organizing the Ottawa permaculture community. With Permaculture Ottawa we are organizing to organize, educate and advocate specifically for liberation permaculture. We are currently in the process of designing a community urban food forest in conjunction with Just Food Ottawa. I am also in the process of finishing my thesis research on the shifting meanings of urban forest through the development of community food forests. From this research I will be developing a number of best practices on organizing community food forests in cities, as well as working permaculture further into urban planning. I wish to do more consultation and design work, specifically in urban settings. Willing to travel anywhere for work.
