Urban Permaculture House

Project Type

Urban, Intentional Communities, Demonstration, Educational

Project Summary

The UP House is a representation of it's 12ish members love of health, non-traditional family, community outreach, activism, the arts, food, self-sufficiency as community, very light ecological footprints, nature stewardship, spiritual growth and just a damn good time! All of this made possible through the use of the exceptional design approach of permaculture!

Project Description

We essentially are renting a triple lot property on the westside of Los Angeles about 10 minutes from Venice Beach. Through the original intention of the landlord, Bobby Israel, Permaculture has been a part of the property for several years now. Through their efforts, we have a small food forest with orange, avocado, banana, bay, persimmon, nectarine, peach, fig and lemon trees. Since we arrived, we have developed approximately an 80 square foot garden, built an outdoor amphitheatre for presentations, an outdoor kitchen with earth oven, extnsive composting practices with vermiculture, built several repurposed material POD's (personal outdoor dwellings), and converted the front yard into a city repair (www.cityrepair.org) style community space with keyhole bed and herb spiral mandala with a COB bench and community bulletin board. Projects for the future: greywater system with aquaponics pond and edible filtering plants; more WOOFing style PODS and a treehouse; chickens; bees; and a value-added products and seedling business from our surplus. We plan to develop a template to teach others to create their own affordable and truly enoyable and sustainable model for living!

Legend of Badges

Note: The various badges displayed in people profiles are largely honesty-based self-proclamations by the individuals themselves. There are reporting functions users can use if they know of blatant misrepresentation (for both people and projects). Legitimacy, competency and reputation for all people and projects can be evidenced and/or developed through their providing regular updates on permaculture work they’re involved in, before/after photographs, etc. A spirit of objective nurturing of both people and projects through knowledge/encouragement/inspiration/resource sharing is the aim of the Worldwide Permaculture Network.

PRI Teacher

With the exception of the ‘Member’ who has never taken a PDC, all of the above can apply to become a PRI PDC Teacher. PRI PDC Teachers are those who the PRI recognise, through a vetting board, as determined and competent to teach the full 72-hour course as developed by Permaculture founder Bill Mollison – covering all the topics of The Designers’ Manual as well as possible (i.e. not cherry picking only aspects the teacher feels most interested or competent in). Such teachers also commit to focussing on the design science, and not including subjective spiritual/metaphysical elements. The reason these items are not included in the PDC curriculum is because they are “belief” based. Permaculture Design education concerns itself with teaching good design based on strategies and techniques which are scientifically provable.

PRI PDC Teachers may be given teaching and/or consultancy offerings as they become available as the network grows.
