About Xavier Fux

I was born in Mexico City and studied Anthropology of Religion at the University of Western Ontario, Canada. After 7 years living in Toronto, I moved back to Mexico and opened a restaurant in Playa del Carmen. I became a world travelling house/trance DJ in the electronic dance scene and had a residence in some Ibiza clubs...

I decided to get into Permaculture when my friend, Stephen Brooks, an avid and respected Permaculturist and fruit expert, invited me to his farm Punta Mona in Costa Rica, where I met Evan Marks, an aquaponics and PC consultant, and took an Intro to Permaculture course which was very inspiring... a year later, I invited Evan to offer a 10-day PDC on my land in Tulum, and got more involved with the subject.

From then on, I started preparing my land in Tulum, built 2 eco homes (www.casacaracoltulum.com) and, together with Stephen Brooks and some friends, began a 32-hectare, 100% off the grid eco village in Orotina, Costa Rica, called Tacotal.

After 4 years, Tacotal is starting to look amazing, with beautiful and productive avocado, banana, papaya, acerola, marañon (cashew nut), sweet apple, grapefruit, orange, lemon, passionfruit and mango trees all over the project, providing shade and food. Next step will be tilapia ponds, more roads and infrastructure...

I also own a company called Green Beat (www.greenbeat.org) which sell green products such as biodigetsers, solar panels, grease traps, electric bicicles and plastic aerobic composters, as well as offering consulting.

I was involved leading a project in Congo, Africa, where my wife, Melanie and I are worked with a community of 500 Pygmies, teaching them permaculture and helping them become sustainable. More info on the project can be found on our blog: www.congoproject2011.blogspot.com

My current projects involve the Green beat Permaculture Center in Tulum, Mexico, and a 1900m2 acuaponic farm in Mexico City.

The Green Beat Center is on a 4000m2 piece of land, where we are growing all kinds of veggies, Moringa, cranberry Hibiscus, and have a volunteer program. We teach 2 PDC's a year and are starting to work with Mayan communities.

The Acuaponic farm is in the middle of Mexico city occupying 1900 m2 of the rooftop of a landmark building. We will launch the farm in March 2013 and are hoping to produce 3000 heads of greens a week for local restaurants and basket programs in nearby neighborhoods.
