ecoart farm

Project Type

Rural, Demonstration, Educational

Project Summary

The ecoart Farm project aims to create a natural system of perennial abundance to satisfy human needs in food, shelter, energy and natural ecosystem requirements, whilst remediating an overgrazed and polluted piece of rural land. The site lies on the flat coastal plains outside the main town of Lefkas. The project is designed as a ‘closed circuit’ unit, in which the yields and by-products of one system are used to satisfy the needs of another, constantly circulating and transforming energy by passing it through multiple elements. Special emphasis is put on addressing biodiversity and soil, aiming at increasing the protection of soil biodiversity and its many ecological functions. The ecoart Farm design is based on the principles of Permaculture. By exploring and exposing these principles we can educate and inspire people to perpetuate the building of sustainable infrastructure.

Project Description

Ecoart farm is a complex formation. It is not simply an aesthetic public exhibit. It develops properties of a production facility and more importantly, a training center - intended to facilitate social participation and environmental education - a prerequisite for broader ecological restoration. Ecoart farm demonstrates the sustainable practices applied in the management of natural resources:

Traditional and technologically advanced environmental standards on landscape, plant and basic natural resources management (sun, water, air, soil).

Traditional natural building techniques (by case study examination of antiseismic techniques used on the island of Lefkas, and natural building materials) that provide a rich variety of applications in bioclimatic architecture and sustainable urban development

Innovative forms of contemporary remedial art (ecoart)

Legend of Badges

Note: The various badges displayed in people profiles are largely honesty-based self-proclamations by the individuals themselves. There are reporting functions users can use if they know of blatant misrepresentation (for both people and projects). Legitimacy, competency and reputation for all people and projects can be evidenced and/or developed through their providing regular updates on permaculture work they’re involved in, before/after photographs, etc. A spirit of objective nurturing of both people and projects through knowledge/encouragement/inspiration/resource sharing is the aim of the Worldwide Permaculture Network.

PRI Teacher

With the exception of the ‘Member’ who has never taken a PDC, all of the above can apply to become a PRI PDC Teacher. PRI PDC Teachers are those who the PRI recognise, through a vetting board, as determined and competent to teach the full 72-hour course as developed by Permaculture founder Bill Mollison – covering all the topics of The Designers’ Manual as well as possible (i.e. not cherry picking only aspects the teacher feels most interested or competent in). Such teachers also commit to focussing on the design science, and not including subjective spiritual/metaphysical elements. The reason these items are not included in the PDC curriculum is because they are “belief” based. Permaculture Design education concerns itself with teaching good design based on strategies and techniques which are scientifically provable.

PRI PDC Teachers may be given teaching and/or consultancy offerings as they become available as the network grows.
