About Reed Burnam
I hail from Austin, Texas, though I've also called Los Angeles and Jaipur, India home for a few. I hold a double B.A. and an M.A. from UT Austin in South Asian Cultures and Languages, with a focus on North Indian religious literature, ritual performances, and the history of yoga.
I've always been into backpacking, reading, gardening, observation, and being in wild places. I've taken courses on and been generally interested in primitive skills, urban sustainability, community garden organization, and food security issues, as well as more perma-specific projects. In 2012, I had the opportunity to finally complete my on-the-ground PDC at Quail Springs Permaculture with Warren Brush. I also spent a couple of months on-site in the backwoods of Central Texas learning how to construct earthships.
I'm very much interested in the possibility of future international aid work in addition to community building here at home, and helping to spread the gospel of deep sustainability and self sufficiency through teaching and demonstration. I have experience living in and working in India, and can speak a fair amount of Hindi/Urdu. Given my connection to India, I would be quite interested in arranging to be part of larger permaculture projects or classes in South Asia.
In the meantime, I work for a sustainable/organic landscape design company here in Austin, TX (Fertile Ground Organic Gardens), and spend my spare time getting my hands dirty, building things, growing food, and living a pretty awesome life.
